ARCHEOLOGY DIGS ON CHICAGO'S GOLD COAST

 

This Tribune story reveals that that archeology is not just for realms overseas but that there is a past yet to be unearthed and discovered right here in Chicago. Mary Leighton and Rebecca Graff are co-directors and co-instructors of the DePaul Urban Historical Archeology Field School-Summer 2010 program work with students at an archeological dig at The Charnley House, 1365 N. CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT  WASHBURNE CULINARY INSTITUTE

 

Established in 1937, the program at Washburne Culinary Institute is one of the oldest in the nation, providing students with the basic skill set necessary for any kitchen. Washburne operates and staffs the renowned Parrot Cage Restaurant at South Shore Cultural Center. This video not only introduces us to the historic facilities of the Institute and restaurant but also Buckingham Fountain's Fountain Cafe which they also operate.

CHICAGO'S ARCHITECTURE

 

A brief documentary on Chicago’s architectural mecca created by high school classmates in an Honors World History class for the Chicago Metro History Fair competition. This their project came in first place in CPS area 26 fair.[02-23-2010] Some of the references are dated (no mention of the Trump Tower as Chicago's second tallest building - not to nitpick) but overall they did a good job

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO'S LOGAN ARTS CENTER

 

Architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien unveiled their designs for the Logan Arts Center

and presented their plans for the 155-foot towering center Nov 10, 2009 to a standing-room only campus audience of students, faculty, alumni, staff, and friends. This video is a series of brief interviews and visuals to form a picture of what is touted to become the

cornerstone of south campus as a striking figure of minimalist modernism with a visually stunning glass and stone building design

CHICAGO GREEN ROOF

 

Chicago's efforts and accomplishments in the green movement have been well-documented. The roof atop city hall was no doubt the "breakout" project in officially launching Chicago's sustainable campaign. Since the instillation of city hall's green roof, grandiose intentions have been voiced to "green" all the roofs along the Red Line and other such transformative projects. This narrative featuring a representative from Chicago's Department of the Environment extols the benefits of greening the roof of Chicago's municipal headquarters and beyond.

Perhaps no other contemporary architecture firm in the world has attained the level of impact in Chicago and the world as has Skidmore. Owings and Merrill. As far as the offerings among music videos out there which prominently depict Chicago, this one by Kanye West featuring Chicago-born rapper Common does it as well any we've seen. Typically, an almost 9 minute video is difficult to endure; but this presentation from the Chicago Film Office is an exception. An intro of the city's iconic streetscapes and buildings leads quickly into scenes from the many unforgettable movie moments made in Chicago over the years.
